Documenting DC history with magazines, books, and other publications

Washington History magazine

From 2014 to 2019, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., published books and magazines about the history of the city. During this time, the organization delivered eight issues of Washington History, the only scholarly publication devoted to the history of our nation’s capital. Started in 1989, it has been printed since 1897. Washington History features scholarly articles, reviews, and an array of images. It is written and edited by historians and journalists.

Books

The Spring 2014 issue of Washington History was dedicated to jazz music in Washington, DC. As a result of its success, Georgetown University Press co-published a book about the topic.

Noted historians Maurice Jackson and Blair Ruble, editors of the magazine and the book, present a collection of original and fascinating stories about the DC jazz scene throughout its history. A co-publishing initiative with Georgetown University Press, the book includes over thirty museum-quality photographs and a guide to resources for learning more about DC jazz.
